[mitotoxin]
This is a general term for fusion proteins obtained by translation of mRNAs derived from hybrid genes in which a gene encoding a growth factor or a cytokine has been fused to another gene encoding a cytotoxic protein (Lappi and Baird, 1990).
The resulting fusion proteins specifically bind to the growth factor receptor in vitro and in vivo. The internalization of receptor/hybrid protein complexes by cells releases the toxic component of the hybrid protein and thus allows these cells to be specifically killed. See also: Cytokine fusion toxins, Immunotoxin, Antibody fusion proteins; see also: Muteins.
