[R cell]
R cells are photosensitive ectodermal cells of the Drosophila melanogaster compound eye. These polarized epithelial cells function as insect photoreceptor cells. They are the counterparts of vertebrate rod cells and cone cells and build and support an enormous, rhodopsin-rich photosensory plasma membrane organelle, the rhabdomere (for overview see: Nagaraj and Banerjee, 2004; Xia and Ready, 2011).
