[Rh(dull), Rh(bright)]
This compound (abbr. also: Rh-123) is a cationic dye (6-amino-9-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)xanthen-3-ylidene]azanium chloride) used widely as a marker for mitochondria in living cells. Its uptake is dependent on plasma and mitochondrial membrane potential (Ronot et al, 1986).
Rhodamine-123, together with Hoechst 33342, is used also to identify hematopoietic stem cells by fluorescence activated cell sorting (Wolf et al, 1993). See: CFU-S (colony-forming unit spleen), LTRC (long-term repopulating cells), side population cells. For another dye used for the same purpose see also: Hoechst 33342.
