abbr. SP cells. This term pertains to a population of blood cells that have been enriched for hematopoietic stem cells by depleting mature blood cells of all cells bearing lineage markers identifying them as macrophages, granulocytes, T-cells, B-cells, and erythrocytes. Among the remaining cells that do not express any lineage markers (lineage negative cells), some have the ability to exclude certain dyes (see, for example: Hoechst 33342).
