[soluble immune response suppressor] A factor of approximately 10 kDa that is secreted by cells stimulated with mitogens, antigens and IFN. SIRS is found also in the serum of patients with steroid-responsive nephrotic syndrome, which frequently have suppressed immune responses. Measurement of SIRS levels in these patients, however, is not a sensitive enough assay for predicting the response to treatment.
SIRS requires activation by oxidation and is probably a metalloprotein. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of one molecular form of SIRS (SIRS-alpha-7) displays significant homology with certain neurotoxins (short neurotoxin 1) found in sea snake, adder, and cobra species.
SIRS is detected by its capacity to suppress the induction of plaque forming cells
