[TPA response element] A short sequence (TGACTCA) in the promoter region of some cytokine genes and other genes. It mediates the expression of these genes in response to some external stimuli, for example Phorbol esters such as 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate.
TRE is the binding site for a transcription factor (see: gene expression) called AP-1. This factor is encoded by the c-Jun gene. In many different cell types treatment with Phorbol esters (PMA) leads to the activation of protein-kinase C (PKC) and subsequently to the activation of the AP-1-responsive gene expression. The TRE sequence also binds other transcription factors
