The mouse tag7 gene encodes a cytokine of 182 amino acids, which exists in a cell-associated and a soluble form (Kiselev et al, 1998). The soluble form of tag7 triggers cell death by apoptosis in mouse L929 cells in vitro and this process does not involve activation of transcription factor NF-kappa-B.
Tag7 has been shown to be identical with the peptidoglycan recognition protein PGLYRP-1 [peptidoglycan recognition protein 1], a conserved protein that binds to peptidoglycan or live bacteria (see: PGRP [Peptidoglycan recognition proteins
