A macrophage-like myelomonocytic leukemia cell line established from inbred BALB/c mice. This cell line is used as a standard cell line because it does not require exogenous growth factors or cytokines for growth and survival.
Owing to the integration of a retroviral genome in the vicinity of the IL3 gene this cell line constitutively produces IL3 (see: IAP, intracisternal A particles). Constitutive production of IL3 by WEHI-3B-cells is enhanced by sodium butyrate and is accompanied by the growth arrest of WEHI-3B-cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle.
