Called also: burr erythrocytes, echinocytes, echinocytic erythrocytes, crenated erythrocytes (crenocytes). Sometimes, these cells are being referred to also as prickle cells.
Burr cells are a distinct shape variant of normal erythrocytes characterized by the presence of multiple evenly spaced cell surface projections with serrated edges that cover the entire surface (Smith and Khakoo, 1970). These cells may be confused with another aberrant erythrocyte shape form with cell surface projections, so-called acanthocytes. Burr cell projections are smaller and much more uniform in shape and distribution. Burr cells are poorly deformable and imparts high viscosity to the blood and thus interferes with capillary blood flow. Bunyaratvej et al (1985) have reported reduced numbers of normally shaped erythrocytes (see: discocytes) in patients with beta-thalassemia/HbE disease, which is reduced further by splenectomy, larger splenic sizes, and increasing anemia. The numbers of burr cells are singularly associated with splenectomy. Most likely, almost all of these cells are destroyed by the spleen.
