The cellular c-myc oncogene is a member of a family of related genes including N-myc and L-myc. c-myc is the cellular countepart of the viral v-myc oncogene). The genes encode nuclear DNA-binding phosphoproteins that are involved in the regulation of gene expression and/or DNA replication during cell growth and differentiation. Sequences of the myc oncogene have been highly conserved throughout evolution, from Drosophila melanogaster to vertebrates.
c-myc encodes a protein of 65 kDa which is expressed in almost all normal and transformed cells
