Preantral granulosa cells are the precursor cells of two types of granulosa cells found in antral follicles: cumulus cells that closely surround the fully-grown oocyte to form a cumulus-oocyte complex (abbr. COC), and mural granulosa cells. Preantral granulosa cells share more similarities with cumulus cells than with mural granulosa cells, but preantral granulosa cells and cumulus cells differ in their ability to undergo expansion (Vanderhyden et al, 1990; Diaz et al, 2006).
