These cells (type 3 gustatory cells) are found in taste buds (Azzali, 1997; Northcutt, 2004). These cells differ morphologically (presence of dense core light vesicles) from other taste bud cells (dark cells, light cells; Toyoshima and Tandler, 1989). Their function is not known. The cells form synapses with sensory neurons and may have functions as gustatory receptor cells (Kanazawa and Yoshie, 1996; Murray, 1986).
