[vaccinia virus growth factor] VVGF, known also as Vaccinia 19 kDa protein (see: VGF, vaccinia growth factor), is detected in the medium of vaccinia-virus-infected cells. The factor is a processed form of a polypeptide encoded in the vaccinia virus genome which is related to EGF and TGF-alpha.
VVGF, unlike EGF or TGF, is glycosylated. VVGF binds to the EGF receptor and stimulates its autophosphorylation. and may, therefore allow the virus to subvert EGF receptor-dependent functions.
